| 2nd May 2026 Mendelssohn's 'Elijah' |

Felix Mendelssohn’s famous and breathtaking oratorio (musical drama) Elijah brings to life the dramatic biblical story of the prophet Elijah. Written for the 1846 Birmingham Music Festival and hailed as a triumph, this masterpiece remains as popular today – in fact it served as the concluding concert of the 2025 Edinburgh Festival at the Usher Hall. The score combines Baroque grandeur with gorgeous Romantic orchestration, and is packed with thrilling choruses, lyrical solos, some highly effective word-painting, and dramatic orchestral passages, building to a fiery climax with Elijah’s ascent to heaven in a flaming chariot.
The choir is accompanied by the Sussex Concert Orchestra conducted by Kenneth Roberts, and features soloists Peter Grevatt (baritone), Kristian Thorkildsen (tenor), Louisa Hunter-Bradley (mezzo-soprano) & Kristy Swift (soprano).
Tickets are £22 and £19 (£17 for ‘Friends of BCS’ any seat; £7 for students/under 16s for any seat). They are available from choir members, from Second Spin in Sackville Rd, Bexhill (cash only) or from the DLWP box office – https://www.dlwp.com/event/mendelssohns-elijah/. Please note that online bookings from the DLWP will incur a £1 booking fee, which is reflected in the prices shown on their website. In-person bookings at the box office do not incur this booking fee, but the DLWP do take a commission of 5%, which reduces the amount which goes to the choir. We are not using online Ticketsource for this concert.
Come along and enjoy a wonderful and dramatic evening of music!

It is not too late to join the choir if you’re thinking of giving choral music a go, or know anyone else who might be interested! There is increasing evidence that singing in a choir brings real health and social benefits as well as enjoyment. We rehearse on Wednesday evenings 6.45-8.45 p.m., at Little Common Community Centre, Shepherd’s Close, Bexhill TN39 4SQ, and invite people to come along free of charge for a few weeks to see how they get on. It’s helpful if you have some ability to follow written music, but we don’t have auditions.
